ORIGINAL BUILDING
The Bluffton Oyster Company building recognized as a historic structure during a recent survey, is as much a part of Bluffton's history as the Card House and the Church of the Cross. Located at the end of Wharf Street on the pristine May River, it is built on shells from previous shucking operations over the last two hundred years.

BLUFFTON'S BUSINESS
The oyster business was "the" business of Bluffton up until the 1930's with five different oysters gathering operations.
MAY RIVER
The Bluffton Oyster Company is conveniently located on the bank of the pristine May River. All of our local catch comes from the river and the surrounding Port Royal Sound and Atlantic Ocean.

LOCATION
The oyster company at the end of Wharf Street is built on shells from previous shucking operations over the last two hundred years. This may be the reason the land under the factory juts into the river abnormally.
TURN OF THE CENTURY
The Bluffton Oyster Company actually sits on reclaimed land, built up by more than a hundred years of discarded shells from previous shucking operations. The oyster business thrived in early Bluffton and throughout the 1920's, with five different oyster operations in the area.

THE WHOLE OYSTER
In addition to selling the oyster meat, the shells were sold for road surfacing and for chicken scratch.
OUR FLEET
Today our modern fleet of shrimp boats sails the local waters harvesting the freshest shrimp and selling them direct to you at our factory store at the end of Wharf Street in Bluffton.

NEW EDITION
"Daddy's Girls", our latest addition to our fleet, can be seen on the surrounding waters during shrimp season.
NIGHT FALLS ON THE MAY RIVER
The May River is one of Bluffton's most beautiful amenities and offers a host of recreational opportunities. Beyond the impressive saltwater marsh views this remarkable tidal ecosystem is abundant with wildlife including a large population of Bottlenose Dolphins and a variety of birdlife.

GATHERING PLACE
In addition to being a very popular gathering place for oyster roasts and crab boils the Bluffton Oyster Company and its adjacent park have also set the background for political rallies and news broadcasts.

Holiday Demand

Demand for fresh oysters, crabs, shrimp and fish is especially high in advance of holidays. The Bluffton Oyster Company will be happy to reserve your order in advance for pick-up when you request. Call early 843-757-4010.

Soft-Shell Blue Crabs

A delicacy enjoyed by many. The season is short, generally in early April and only lasts a few weeks. Bluffton Oyster Company offers soft-shell blue crabs caught in our local waters. Please stop by and see how we harvest these delicious crabs for you.

what's the right season for oysters?

Oyster season opens in September 1st and closes on May 15th annually, although the Department of Natural Resources can vary the season if conditions warrant.
